Monster Reference

Since the only part of the monster that will be visible will be the hands and claws and part of the arms, thats what I have been focusing on. to make the hands seem as creepily and as horrifying as possible I have opted for a design that seemed quite slender yet also big and grizzly to match the winter and cold season that the film is set in. However, also trying to add in elements of a sleep paralysis monster into the design too, as those are more like the monsters that you will find lurking in the dark corners of your room.

Puppet making

I have started to make some progress with making my main character’s puppet. I have made the main body out of polystyrene and have twisted wires for the skeleton and limbs of the puppet whilst attaching it to the body with the plastic cases of biro pens and also using them for the “bones” of the puppet.

For the monsters armature as the only thing that will be visible, will be the limbs. So I had twisted a thicker wire to make bigger and longer hands and claws. For the claws I had sculpted them out of miliput. I had also wrapped the wire in black wool and will be painting it brown and grey to give it a more grizzly monster look and will also be painting the claws greyish black colour.

Set making

Make shift and rough draft of the set – the characters room. I made this to really just plan out the placing of things around the room and how much space i would need for the character to move around during the film and how big i needed to make everything in comparison to everything else around it. And also figuring out how the character would be able to interact with its surroundings.

Film 6: Animatic

Rough idea now

  • Monster haunts little girl
  • Girl pops under her bed – starts looking for something
    • Her hand reaches out and she’s looking for something and moving things around
    • Her eyes grow widen as she notices something
  • She bounces back up on her bed – eyes still wide
    • Then we see her lifting up a toy (wooden) sword and saying “Yay! Found it!” with a bright smile on her face
  • She proceeds to turn to the make shift “monster” she made which is composed of random objects piled onto a chair – books/ lamps/ toys etc…
  • Play fighting with it, pretending its a monster etc… as if she was a brave knight or something
  • In a victory she plunges the sword into the “monster” heart and “yanks” it out screaming “Victory!”
  • Only to then realise as she’s got her hands in the air in victory, the sword isn’t there
    • Instead it is in the “monster”
    • Curious and very confused, she goes to pull it out yet struggles immensely
  • As she tries her best to get the sword out – she’s hanging tightly onto the sword
    • The sword moves up slightly with her hanging onto it
  • She lets go and watches the sword arise from the mess of a “monster” on the chair
  • As the sword goes up something begins to emerge from behind the mess – something with glowing eyes and a low growl
  • In fear she tries to rush for the door as it seems to come her way
  • Yet as soon as she reaches the door knob
    • Her fingers barely touch the door knob
  • She gets dragged away
    • And we see the monsters hand and arm dragging her back down and across the room
  • She backs up against the wall where the window is
  • The monster crawls towards
    • She notices that the only way to get away safely is out the window
  • She throws something at the monster as a distraction
    • She climbs on top of the box thats placed under the window and rushes out of the window
    • Safely landing on the snow
  • Straight away heads for the woods for for safety as she hears a loud growl from angering the monster
  • As she hides behind a log clutching her knees to her chest looking around to make sure she’s safe
    • She closes her eyes tightly shut
  • A shadow appears over her
    • She slowly turns around
      • Gradually looks up and screams as soon as she notices its the monster looming over her
  • Loud growl – screen goes black
  • The End.

Storyboard

  • Monster haunting little girl
  • Girl gets ready for bed -becomes suspicious of something in her room
  • Parents come in to reassure her that everything is going to be okay and tucks her into bed
  • Leaving the door slightly ajar and turning the lights off
  • Some peace as the girl slowly starts to fall asleep
  • Just as she’s about to close her eyes she hears something drop
    • This causes her to be alert quickly sitting up in her bed
  • Glancing around the room – panning shot
    • To find any abnormalities
    • Sees something in the corner
    • Goes back to it and seems normal
  • This leaves her a little confused
  • Her bed shakes
  • She pauses – shocked and scared
    • Checks under her bed – sees nothing – moves boxes out of the way – still nothing
  • Gets back up normally in bed
    • Sighs in defeat
  • Shadow comes over her
    • Behind her
  • She slowly turns around eyes wide open
  • Looking down at first but slowly looks up to the face of a monster
  • Monster growls
  • Girl screams
  • Screen goes to black
  • The End.

Rough Film Plan/ Idea

  • “Where The Wild Things Are?” Inspiration, especially for the setting.
  • Starting with a child playing in her room with a hand made unusual toy – replicating a creature
  • In the middle – noticing something in the background/ in the corners/ slight shadow of something/ moving the smallest of things in a peculiar way?
  • The child notices something across the other side of the room/ a sound of something maybe – rustling?
  • Quickly turns and looks and sees a forest/ woodsHalf of her room has transformed into some sort of forest/ woods
  • Magical soft/ warm lighting
  • The child starts to explore in awe – clutching her toy tightly in her hand – giggling and laughing at the weird change but happy to be wondering around
  • However, soon notices something lurking around in the shadows again – alarming the young child even more and disturbing her peace and excitement
  • The lighting eventually and gradually getting colder and darker (losing its “magical feel”)
  • Eventually the creature pops up behind the child – revealing to be an exact replica of the toy in her hand – however, much scarier and gruesome and larger
  • The girl slowly turns around – But as soon as she sees it – she drops her toy immediately and screams – mid scream the screen goes pitch black and all you hear is a low growl
  • When the screen pops up again – the camera is angled at the floor with the dropped toy in focus and you see the girls limp arm fall slowly besides it.
  • Then “The End”!
