Documentary Film Proposal

For this documentary film, I have decided to interview my uncle, Hafiz Islam, as my contributor who is a gold medalist in ‘Brazilian Jiu Jitsu’. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a form of martial arts alongside being a combat sport that focuses on grappling with particular emphasis on ground fighting.

For my interview I asked him a series of questions based around his training and practice, eager to know how he fit it into his busy schedule alongside teaching and fatherhood. Also, questions regarding his inspiration to start this journey as well as what encourages him to carry on. Moreover, I was also intrigued as to the impact this sport could have on someone and how they can amply that to impact others around them. In addition, I wanted to know what attributes someone can gain from this sport that can help them grow and strengthen and better themselves as a person, not only just physically, but mentally and spiritually as well.

Additionally, I was interested in knowing what it means to be involved in a combat sport like Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and in what ways does this sport effect not only you positively, but your life style.

However, I also jump in to question any challenges that practitioners may experience along their journey and how they overcome and deal with such obstacles. Whilst also discussing my uncle’s championship, belts, medals and tournaments, and his ways of preparation for that.

Furthermore, I was fascinated in the influence you could have from within your own community and to encourage them to flow in the same footsteps to do something just as great and worthwhile with their time and effort. Whilst encouraging them to do better for themselves. Especially the younger generation, as it is crucial to help them grow as strong confident people. Also, I wish to highlight the influence my contributor has had as a practitioner amongst the Asian community. As it is a rare case that we see people within our community to achieve such goals.

I plan to gather this information from the interview, and portray Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in a positive light that can help break down the stereotype of combat sports being seen as violent and more of a way of discipline. And not just for this particular sports, but for other combat and martial arts as well. To enforce a better light on them and to encourage others in to a healthy lifestyle; not only physically, but mentally and spiritually too.

I also plan on using 2D animation for this short film, as well as seeing this as a chance to  experiment with perspective shots and improve my skills on transitioning and morphing. The style of this film will be kept simplistic as I would rather the audience still focus on what is being said and merely to have the visuals as a way to compliment the audio and voice track.

Furthermore, seeing as this documentary is based on a combat sport, I also plan to rotoscope one of the contributor’s tournaments as I feel it would be interesting to see throughout part of the film.
